Dear Mr Clegg.

First of all, congratulations for your performance in the televised leaders’ debates. You have been like a breath of fresh air.

I understand that this week’s debate is the last and will focus on the economy. I hope you will not miss the opportunity to remind the country of Gordon Brown’s many failings and disasters both as Chancellor and Prime Minister in this area of government, and his responsibility for a very great part of the mess in which we now find ourselves.

The British public should be reminded that it was Brown who put in place the tripartite regulatory system which proved to be as dysfunctional as the man who created it; that it was Brown who allowed the financial services sector to carry on unchecked and unsupervised in supplying credit to those who very obviously could not afford it, resulting in a consumer debt of more than £1.3trn; that it was Brown who believed the bankers when they told him that that they knew what they were doing and that everything was OK; that it was Brown who, in a speech at the Guild Hall in 2005, proclaimed a new ‘golden era’ of ‘endless growth’ – and who must have believed his own spin that we were in an endless boom, else why sell of a huge chunk of the country’s gold reserve at a historic low price for gold? Why do that, unless you truly believe that having a large gold reserve is too ‘old school’ and that tax revenues from an endless boom will flow forever? Perhaps if he had spent a bit less time plotting against Tony Blair and a bit more time on his job we wouldn’t be where we are now.

I believe it is a matter of national salvation that Gordon Brown be removed from Number 10 at the coming election. I believe him to be a dysfunctional, delusional, incompetent fool, unfit to run a bath let alone a country. In 13 years the government he now leads has destroyed the economy; damaged the morale and effectiveness of our armed forces by asking them to fight one illegal war and one unwinnable war; utterly demoralised the Health and Education services with endless change and insane bureaucratic targets; politicised the civil service; lost control of the country’s borders; lost control of the streets of our major cities to gangs and organised crime; seen inequality grow to near-Victorian levels with the rich much, much richer and the poor much, much poorer and many more of them; and destroyed our civil liberties to protect the war criminals who to this day continue to make up so much of government.

The country needs change – and not the change the Conservatives are talking about, which would simply see one rotten Party replaced by another. The country needs a root-and-branch reformation, and I very much hope you will be the man to give it to us.

The Tories need to hammer this message home until the proverbial man on the street knows the numbers. Only when people realise that we were first in and last out of recession of the major economies and that, as Rosemary Righter points out in The Times today, the deficit is roughly twice as large in real terms than it was when Healey was forced to go to the IMF will Brown’s standing collapse as much as it should by rights.

Brown’s defenders will say that he has been dealing with exceptional circumstances. But his pre-crash handling of the public finances was reckless in the extreme. Just before the crash—and after a decade of growth—Britain wasborrowing more than two percent of its GDP.

Dear Sir John
I read with great interest a recent article on BBC News regarding the inquiry you are chairing into the Iraq War.

However, I'm slightly concerned about your assertion in the article that you believe those giving evidence will be unable to lie because "the stuff is there on paper anyway".

Except it isn't, is it Sir John?

Along with a majority of others in this country, I believe that the real truth about Iraq lies in the unminuted meetings Tony Blair held on various sofas around Downing Street before the war started. Along with many others I believe that those meetings were unminuted precisely because, like criminals the world over, Blair knew that what he was doing was illegal and wanted no records kept. I firmly believe Iraq was an illegal war launched at the behest of a deranged US President, with which Blair and the rest of the key UK players went along because New Labour had an indiscriminate policy towards America of 'hugging them close', and that as a consequence Blair is a war criminal with the blood of hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians on his hands, to say nothing of the thousands of Allied troops who have been killed or maimed in that war, the destabilisation of the entire region, and the ascendancy of a radical Iran which poses a much greater threat than an Iraq destroyed by a decade of sanctions - which sanctions, incidentally, only served to kill a half-million children and old people and actually make Saddam Hussein's position more secure, not less, by leaving the Baath Party in control of what scant resources remained.

These are truths known by a majority of the British people - a million or more of whom marched in London alone on February 15th 2003, but to no avail because the intelligence had already been fixed around the policy (oh it was 'fixed', alright).

I firmly believe that a majority of the British people think that Tony Blair is a war criminal - many of the parents of those who died in the illegal war not least. Far from 'stopping the traffic' as the first President of the EU, the only traffic I want to see him stop is that in the Hague when he arrives at the Court of Justice to answer charges to war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity.

Let me ask you, Sir John: with no barrister to cross-examine witnesses, and evidence not given under oath, how do you propose to elicit the truth from so accomplished a liar as Blair? If you really want your inquiry to be taken seriously and not to be seen as yet another whitewash, why not appoint Phillipe Sands QC to cross-examine? You say that you are chairing an inquiry and not a trial, yet what an overwhelming majority of the British public want is precisely a trail - one which delivers Blair to where he belongs, behind bars rather than whoring his way around the boardrooms of the world, becoming ever more obscenely rich while the parents of those who die in his illegal wars bury their children. And if we don't get Blair’s head, all that will happen is that your own reputation will be severely damaged. Blair will be brought to justice, if it takes as long as it took with Pinochet...

I read with great interest in the press yesterday your plans to ‘make society more responsible’ (The Guardian).

I thoroughly approve – just what the country needs!

In light of this new atmosphere of accountability and responsibility (for surely the two go hand-in-hand?) I was wondering if you could tell me:

1/ When those responsible for lying and spinning this country into the illegal war in Iraq will be identified and punished? Thousands of UK and US military personnel maimed and killed, and hundreds of thousands of Iraqi civilians killed and displaced, because of an illegal war launched by a moronic, alcoholic, deranged US President with the full complicity of the criminal Blair and his co-conspirators. Can you tell me when all those responsible will be identified and punished?

2/ When the person responsible for putting in place the dysfunctional tripartite regulatory regime which so manifestly failed to stop the bankers gorging on casino capitalism to the ruination of the country’s economy will be identified and removed from office?

No? I didn’t think so…

But of course we know the answer to the second question don’t we, Mr Brown? The next General Election…

I'm wondering whether this is some kind of Spinal Tap routine (if I remember rightly one of their drummers died ina bizarre gardening accident - he built a swimming pool in his garden and drowned in it): Blair was in a gymn, someone came up to him and called him a lying, war-mongering cunt with the blood of hundreds of thousands of Iraqis on his hands, then smacked him hard...

Dear Mr Cameron

Like many who opposed the war in Iraq – and who have been proven right about our misgivings in every important respect – I was outraged last week when Gordon Brown announced that the proposed inquiry into the causes of the war would be held in secret (and remain so despite his concession later in the week that some sessions could, after all, be held in public – yet another example of his completely failing to read the public mood).

I was further outraged, though grimly unsurprised, to read in The Sunday Times yesterday that Brown’s decision to hold the inquiry in secret had been, at least in part, the result of pressure from former PM Blair, who feared that such an inquiry would, it is reported, become a ‘show trial’.

The obvious question to ask is: “Why”? If, as Blair has repeatedly maintained, he did nothing wrong and all the decisions taken were legal and above-board, why should he fear a full and open inquiry into those decisions? If, on the other hand, Bair has something to hide (and I for one believe that he has a very great deal to hide) then he would naturally seek to ensure that this latest inquiry, like those that preceded it, is an empty sham, a whitewash.

I am writing to you today to implore you to commit that, in the even that a majority of the new inquiry is held in private the Conservative Party will, on coming to power, undertake a full release of inquiry testimony and findings.

The anger over Iraq has not gone away, nor will it until we, the British people in whose name this epic crime was committed, have seen justice visited on those responsible. The return, even in the past few days, of hostages’ bodies from that most unfortunate country demonstrates that the decisions taken in 2002 and 2003 continue to echo down the years – not least, of course, for the families of our brave services personnel who have died in Iraq, the relatives of those who died in the terrorist outrage of July 7^th 2005, and the relatives of the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who died as a result of this most misguided and immoral of wars.

For myself, there is not the slightest doubt in my mind that Tony Blair is a war criminal, someone who – far from whoring himself around the boardrooms of the world, becoming ever richer even while the financial catastrophe which brewed on his watch devastates the global economy – should in fact be on trial at The Hague for crimes against humanity, high crimes and misdemeanours, and treason (for conspiring and colluding with a foreign power – America – in a policy which is not and never has been in the best interests of the UK’s domestic security or foreign policy).

I would urge you, on coming to power, to seize the opportunity which Brown was too cowardly to grasp when he became PM – to establish your moral authority and your commitment to the rule of law by making fully public the coming inquiry – or even, in extremis, to repeat the inquiry again with full public disclosure. If Blair, and Hoon, and Straw, and Scarlett, and Powell, and Campbell and the rest are not warmongering criminals and have nothing to be ashamed of, they should welcome the opportunity to clear their names and put the record straight. I rather suspect, however, that when giving evidence on oath, in the full glare of the media and with access to all documentation and official statements made at the time, a very different story would emerge.

The Labour Party has just fluffed its last, best chance to rid themselves of that delusional, dysfunctional fool Gordon Brown. They bottled it, and they will pay the price at the next election when they face utter annihilation. They know this, which is why a fifth of the PLP is clamouring to be made peers by Brown (no rebels in that contingency, I’ll wager): they know it, but they didn’t have the balls (as opposed to Balls) to do anything about it, and so they deserve what they will get.

If you think the Labour Party has been in meltdown the past few weeks, then brother you ain’t seen nothing yet. Can you imagine what state they’re going to be in after another 9 or 10 months or so, after nearly another year of Brown’s incompetence, his gaffs, his YouTube appearances, his mismanagement of then economy, his strange body language, the sheer dysfunctionality that shines from the man like a dark sun? Can you imagine the state they’re going to be in, with a month or two to go to an election (and Brown will leave it as late as he can because he’s a coward who desperately hopes that something will turn up; but eventually he will have to go, he’ll have no choice) and Labour’s popularity into single figures in the opinion polls?

Then they will look back and think what if? What if they had taken the last, best chance they’ve just passed up?

Brown will go down in history as the man who destroyed the British economy and destroyed the Labour Party. And Alan Johnson will go down in history as the man who could have saved the situation but didn’t.

How very apt – one loser (Johnson) pledging loyalty to another loser (Brown). A plague on both their houses.

Having watched with dismay the latest Labour Party election video (http://www.spectator.co.uk/coffeehouse/3618933/brown-resorts-to-bully-tactics.thtml) – nothing about what Labour has done or will do, just personal, unfounded claims about what the Conservatives, and you in particular, would do in office – I think you should follow suit. You might want to think about the following format for the Conservatives’ next video:

- Footage of Gordon Brown, proclaiming an ‘end to boom and bust’

- Footage of Gordon Brown stating that what he actually said was ‘an end to Tory boom and bust’ (just as a matter of interest, I’d take a Tory boom-and-bust over this latest Labour ‘irrevocably destroy the economy for our children’ version any day of the week)

- Footage, if you can find it, of Brown in the City a few years back proclaiming a new era of ‘endless growth’

- Just for good measure, throw in some footage of Brown promising a referendum on the EU Constitution (a double whammy: would appeal to your eurosceptic wing while showing him up as an anti-democracy liar to everyone else)

- A simple end message such as “Another 5 years of this?”

The aim, of course, would be to let this dysfunctional, delusional, incompetent fool condemn himself from his own mouth without your needing to say anything at all. Labour are focussing on what the Conservatives would do – turn that round and focus on what Labour/Brown has done (ie: destroyed the economy to the point where it will take decades and generations to recover, if indeed it ever does).

If Labour really are stupid enough to let Brown lead them into the next election you should take maximum advantage of their stupidity and their cowardice. I am traditionally a Labour supporter/voter (no more), but the current situation goes beyond party politics and into the realm of national salvation. I do not even want to contemplate the prospect of another 5 years of these corrupt, incompetent, war-criminal, totalitarian cretins in power. For the sake of the nation they must be removed from power as soon as possible and swept back into the gutter where they belong.

"Damian McBride may be gone, but his spirit lives on in Labour's latest party political broadcast (watch it after the jump). It features a young chap in a suit (boo! class enemy!) who goes into an empty room and starts hitting a punchbag. Then it comes up with all sorts of claims that could have been drafted by McBride (and, come to think of it, probably were). "David Cameron would leave young people like me on the dole" runs the first - palpable nonsense.
It grows progressively more absurd. Then, finally: "What David Cameron would do is give £200,000 to 3,000 millionaires." That's a lie, rather than an exaggeration. He's referring to inheritance tax, the "millionaires" he refers to would be (how you say?) dead and rather than "give" money, Cameron would propose that the state would not take it from them. The word "lie" is often overused, so let me put it this way: if this claim were made in a document regulated by the London Stock Exchange, then Mr Brown would go to jail. But this, alas, is the type of person we're dealing with: someone who plotted his way to No10 and who tries to stay in power by spreading lies and smears about his opponents."

I don't care that he's paid the money back. It's clear that there is a prima facie case for fraud against Elliot Morley. If he made the clain it was uincumbent on him to ensure that it was a legitimate claim. It's as simple as that. He claims to be 'heartbroken'. Yes, at being found out!

Call in the police to find out who leaked to The Telegraph? NO! Call in the police to investigate, as someone called it on the Today programme on Saturday morning, a 'criminal conspiracy to defraud the public'? YES!

There's only one way out of the current financial crisis that I can see: to identify and claw back the estimated $6 trillion in assets held offshore (Private Eye, 23 Jan - 5 Feb, 2009) - assets a large proportion of which are 'avoided' (for which read 'evaded') tax. For example "The number of companies, most of them single-purpose (no prizes for guessing what that is), registered in the British Virgin Islands is now believed to have reached or be approaching one million!" (ibid)

And that's just the British Virgin Islands. What about the Caymen Islands and all the other tax havens around the world?

That figure of $6 trillion makes even current UK government borrowing levels look small. It should be audited and reclaimed if it can be shown to be money that should have been paid as tax. Except of course that that would involve political courage which gobshite Brown is sadly lacking. He writes books about political courage: the reason it fascinates him so much is because he has none himself.

That Mandelson quote about being 'intensely relaxed' about people getting 'filthy rich' has been much aired of late, but nobody ever quotes the second part: "...as long as they pay their taxes". But they haven't been paying their taxes, have they?

Have just watched Joanna Lumley's statement on the BBC site about the new rules around allowing gurkhas to settle in the UK. I share her shame at this government's utterly shabby treatment of soldiers who have risked their lives for this country for centuries.

It is particularly ironic, of course, because this is the government which has totally lost control of this country's borders to the extent where immigration controls have completely broken down. Don't forget this is the government which thought that 12,000 Poles would turn up when Poland joined the EU, and 600,000 arrived. I have nothing against Poles, but that is a catastrophic miscalculation by government in managing and planning services for those arrivals. And that is, of course, quite without the hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants who have entered this country with impunity.

The treatment of the gurkhas is an absolute disgrace. But it is very New Labour: if you give good service and loyalty your contribution is counted at zero. If you game the system (whether it be immigration controls, employment law or the benefits system) you are encouraged and left alone in peace to get on with it.

This country needs some sanity. It needs a new government.

Sure the sub-prime prtoblem started in America, but it was Brown who had so badly mismanaged the economy (the raid on pension funds, selling off gold reserves when the price was at a historic low, putting in place a tripartite regulatory regime as pschizophrenic and dysfunctional as Brown himself is, failing to do anything about the millions of offshore acounts sheltering up to $6trillion which the business kleptocracy had leached from western countries and stashed out of reach of the tax authorities...) that we were in the worst possible position to ride the storm. It was Brown who deluded himself that everything was ok - who had abolished boom and bust, who hailed an era of endless growth, who single-handedly saved the world - and who made the very great mistake of taking at face value what his banker chums were telling him.

Stalin? You're having a fucking laugh, aren't you? What do you think Stalin would have done in the current situation? He'd have had the secret police drag Fred Goodwin from his rathole in the full glare of the media, have had him put against a wall and shot; and he's have made sure there wasn't a lampost in the City that didn't have a banker swinging from it...

Have just been reading through some old links, and it is interesting to be reminded, around the middle of last year, how massively unpopular Brown was even then in certain areas of the press.

This is Stephen Pollard in The Spectator, in a piece entitled More Than Political Paranoia:

"I've been the first to dance on Mr Brown's political grave. He is a mendacious incompetent who has in the past received an inexplicably favourable - nay. hero-worshipping - press, a man who spent a decade undermining his superior in every way, Tony Blair. Politically, he deserves everything he is about to get."

And this from Bruce 'Odious' Anderson, writing in The Independent, also in July 2008, in a piece called It is almost impossible for Mr Brown to cling on. And it is almost impossible to replace him (a piece which begins with the words "Gordon Brown is finished"):

"[Brown] has every incentive to hold on to his position. If he went now, he would be a strong candidate for the accolade of "worst Prime Minister since 1900". So we can expect him to fight for more time to obtain a better verdict."

As opposed to now, not even a year later, when Brown is a serious contender for the worst Prime Minister ever...

You know, somewhere along the line I think that Gordon brown actually went insane (was it after Blair's first welching on the deal to hand over power? After the second?). Trouble is, nobody noticed until he was actually in Number 10, and then it was too late. Remember all those jibes about him being 'psychologically flawed'? Remember the prediction (can't remember who made it, offhand) that he would be the first PM to be carried out of Number 10 in a strait-jacket? Don't look quite so far-fetched now, do they?

Very interesting piece on Frank Field's blog entitled Darkness At The Heart of The Labour Party. This is an exerpt:

"Week after week MPs have been turning up but with almost no serious work to do. There is the odd bill to be sure. But there is no legislative programme to speak of. Even the debates that are put on to fill in time are ones that deny MPs a vote. The whole exercise is vacuous.

Labour MPs are left staring into the abyss - that nothingness of Harold Wilson's statement [Wilson asserted that the Labour party was a moral crusade or it was nothing]. There is a wish amongst all sections of the PLP for the government to start governing. We wouldn't care too much whether the ideas were Blairite or non-Blairite, as long as we could give the impression of supporting a government that was using the next year to mark out why we should stay in office."

There is no reason why Labout should stay in office. It sold out and betrayed every principle it ever had to get into office in the first place (or rather Tony Blair did, but then he was allowed to) - and once in office it sold out and betrayed the people who needed it most: the poor, the vulnerable, the low-paid. Instead it bent over and greased up for Big Business, sacrificing decades of Labour history on the altar of free enterprise. And just look where it has gotten us.

Piece in yesterday's Guardian, the first of a three-part examination called Can Labour win? (answer: not a fucking prayer). Brown claims that only Labour has the answers and so deserve a fourth term. The answers to what? To the catastrophe they've unleashed on this country? The answers to the destruction of the morale of the army, the politicisation of the civil service, the obsession with targets which has led to a catastrophic collapse of morale among teachers and nursing staff?

We've seen Brown's answers: the answer to the banking crisis (write enormous blank cheques - and lots of them - to bail out the banks while standing by wringing your hands and pleading for reasonable behaviour as the bankers take the country to the cleaners over their bonuses and pensions); we've seen his answer to the ongoing public outrage over the Iraq war (do nothing and hope those who think this government is composed of war criminals will go away: we won't); we've seen his answer to the collapse of sections of the public health care industry (order a 'deep clean' - and a year later here we are with hundreds dying unnecessarily in squalid conditions because of a total failure of management at those hospitals).

Christ, another Parliamentary term of Brown's 'answers' and he will have finished the job which Blair started of totally destroying this country (I often whether they weren't both Russian sleeper agents, put in place before the Iron Curtain fell to reach positions of power from which they could destroy Britain, and who have never managed to escape their programming). As it is the useless, incompetent cunts which comprise this government have lost control of the country's borders, has lost control of its streets, has now totally lost control of its economy - and yet continues to think, as all fundamentally incompetent people do, that if only they have enough data about us, if only they can set targets and measure everything well enough, it will all come right in the end.

It won't - not until these utterly useless turds have been flushed from office back to the sewers of irrelevance along with the rest of the shit, where they belong.

Brown's first election will be his last - Labour are going to be annihilated at the next election, and I for one can't wait. He never, ever, missed an opportunity to trumpet his alleged Prudence - which, of course, we now know was simply code for a total absence of effective regulation and a carte blanche for the banks to do whatever the hell they liked without let or hindrance, even while Brown was robbing pensioners, selling off the nation's gold at historically low prices or proclaiming 'an end to boom and bust' and a new 'golden age' of endless economic growth. What a total fucking cretin....

So David Miliband and Jacqui Smith have both refused to appear before parliament's human rights committee to answer questions about allegations of British collusion in the torture of British citizens and co-operation with American extraordinary rendition operations.

But now 'Boy' Miliband is to be summoned before the Commons foreign affairs committee - a body he can't refuse to appear before, since it was specifically set up to monitor the activities of the Foreign Office.

The time is coming ever-closer when the truth about Britain's shameful role in America's illegal war in Iraq and the whole desperately mismanaged 'war on terror' will come out. We have Straw overriding the Information Commissioner over the release of Cabinet minutes (and just how does one of the major Iraqi war criminals end up as Minister for Justice? Who says these bastards don't have a sense of humour?) and we have Smith and Miliband refusing to co-operate with those investigating allegations of torture and kidnapping. But try as they might the British people refuse to 'draw a line' under Iraq. We know we were lied to, and we know we were right. And we want to see those responsible punished.

We can only hope that when these Labour vermin are finally flushed from office into the gutter along with all the other turds, where they belong, that the Conservative Party does not forget its manifesto commitment to a full public inquiry into Iraq. And if that happens, it is entirely possible that Blair, and Straw, and Hoon, and Scarlett, and Powell, and the rest of the scum responsible for cooking up the case for an illegal war which cost hundreds of thousands of Iraqi lives (to say nothing of the thousands of brave US and UK troops who have died quite needlessly) could very well go to gaol. Only then will we have closure over this shameful, shameful incident.

I couldn't agree with him more. This shameful, shameful government is the result of a Party which compromised all its principles in electing as leader someone who wasn't even a socialist but was just skilled at looking good for (and lying through his teeth to) the cameras; a Party which would do anything to get power after 17 years in Opposition. Since 1997 the part has been lead first by a liar and war criminal, and now by a rank incompetent who was besotted with the money, power and alleged brilliance of the City and swallowed their schtick hook line and sinker, to the ruination of the country and a financial burden which will take decades if not generations to recover from.

Even now this government seems to have no appetite for revenge against the reckless incompetent bankers who got us into this. Parliament is supreme, and that fact should be used. Pass legislation banning the payment of any bonuses at any bank to anyone earning a basic salary above, say, £30k. Identify and prosecute those responsible for this mess. Either those traders didn't understand the toxic derivatives they were trading - in which case they were incompetent and don't deserve a bonus - or they did know what they were selling, in which case they were fraudulent in misrepresenting the risks involved and don't deserve a bonus and they deserve to be prosecuted and jailed.

Brown doesn't seem to have the slightest idea of the national mood: the people want to see heads on sticks, and if we don't get the heads of bankers we'll settle for Brown's head at the next election. As things are going Labour are going to be totally annihilated, and rightly so.

Further to my letter of 13^th January, I am pleased to see that it finally seems as though politicians and regulators are waking up to the danger posed by short-sellers and hedge funds. I welcome the proposed new rules to force disclosure of short positions across the entire UK stockmarket, even as I am disappointed that the FSA has ruled out a complete ban on the practise of short-selling.

In my view there are only two groups of people with a legitimate interest in a company’s share price: those who already own shares in that company and those thinking of buying shares in that company. Why should a third party with no interest in buying shares in a company be allowed to affect that company’s share price by selling what they do not own - and, in the case of naked shorting, have not even borrowed? To listen to hedge fund managers, one would think that they were doing the markets a favour by selling stock short and creating, as they would have it, ‘liquidity’: as if what they were doing was not – as in fact it is – about manipulating the share price of companies and naked greed.

Shorting is speculation, pure and simple: and we all now know where rampant, ill-informed speculation can lead, whether it be shorting shares or trading in exotic financial derivatives. If the world’s financial markets are ever to return to some semblance of sanity and normality, a fundamental re-engineering of processes, practises and risk management will be required. I cannot think of a better place to start than an outright ban on short selling.

I saw a report in The Times on Saturday (http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/banking_and_finance/article5679626.ece) that many fund managers are reacting angrily to the proposed new disclosure rules. The obvious question to ask is: why? If short-selling is perfectly legitimate and above-board – as hedge funds and others claim – why should they or would they worry about being forced to disclose their short positions? If, on the other hand, shorting is – as I and many others maintain – immoral, unethical, highly dangerous and should be illegal, then one could understand that they would have concerns.

If short-sellers are forced to declare their positions across the entire market, only then will the full extent of their manipulation become apparent. That is why so many of them are so worried.

In my view short-selling should be banned, immediately and across the entire market. Power and control should be given back to the pension funds and investment funds who manage the wealth of the many; not given to the few to make obscene profits off the back of those who prudently save. Such a recalibration will be required if we are to avoid the events of the past two years or so ever happening again: why would the Labour Party not do so now, re-establish that it is on the side of the working family against the spivs and the speculators, and avoid a catastrophic wipe-out at the next general election?

Dear Mr McFall.
I read in the press over the weekend that you will be chairing the Commons Treasury committee when it questions hedge fund managers later this month.

I further understand that you are opposed to the proposed lifting of the ban by the FSA on the short-selling of financial institution stocks.

However, I would ask a wider question: why is shorting of any stock allowed?

The traditional answer from those who conduct short-selling is that the practise provides liquidity to the markets. But I’m afraid I find such an explanation unconvincing, self-serving and disingenuous. It is the price mechanism which should provide liquidity, according to the simple laws of supply and demand.

If a share is illiquid (ie those that hold the stock do not wish to sell it) then the laws of supply and demand suggest that if there is a demand for those shares the price should rise until some of those holding the stock are persuaded to sell. Similarly if shareholders lose confidence in a company’s prospects or in a company’s management team they will sell the stock, and the price will drop until it finds a level at which it looks like good value when it will be bought.

These processes are easily understood. And yet short-selling subverts these mechanisms by allowing hedge funds and others to borrow stock (or, in the case of naked shorting, not even that) to sell.

Let me ask you this, Mr McFall – when else in life can someone sell what they do not own? Quite rightly I cannot sell your house because I do not own it. I cannot sell my friend’s car because I do not own that either. And yet short-sellers can and do sell what they do not own.

Far from creating liquidity to help the markets such a practise actually distorts the markets by warping the normal processes of supply and demand. It is precisely these kind of warped, exotic business practises which have flown the global economy into the side of a mountain and landed us where we are now.

To listen to those who defend hedge funds one would think that such funds sell a stock short and hope for the price to drop. In fact they sell shares in a company – and keep selling – until the price drops. Can you imagine these Masters of the Universe leaving such a thing to chance?

There are many, many companies where double-digit percentages of the shares are ‘on loan’ and being used for shorting. Shorting, by definition, involves falling share prices, thereby harming small investors – and pensioners not least. What kind of Labour government is it which puts the interests of obscenely wealthy hedge fund managers over those of people who have diligently (dare one say ‘prudently’?) saved into a pension all their lives? How would you feel, Mr McFall, if you were recently retired and forced to cash in your pension and buy an annuity with the markets tanked as a result of the bad bets and reckless lending decisions of City whizzkids?

I hope you give the hedgies a very rough time of it indeed later this month. I further hope that the government will legislate to end the practise of short-selling. You may find that nearer the next election your party needs a boost in the polls. Banning short-selling across the board, the accompanying stock market rally and improvements in people’s pension prospects, and the pain and bankruptcy of many hedge funds could prove to be just what Labour needs.
